Digital Transformation Lab for Teaching and Learning

The project “Leuphana: Digital Transformation Lab for Teaching and Learning” (DigiTaL) involves a total of 15 professors as well as other teachers, students, all three schools and central institutions with 11 subprojects in the clusters of digital teaching-learning innovations, digital literacy and digital internationalization. The participants are working together on a sustainable digitization strategy for university teaching at three levels: the overarching lab level, the cluster level, and the subproject level.

The Digital Transformation Lab (Lab for short) implements the idea of a transformative university by enabling the goal-oriented further development of teaching innovations, the promotion of developments in teaching strategy and the exchange and transfer of results to the university and society through collegial irritation and re-conceptualization. This creates spaces of interaction to bring together the current diversity of single players in a new community of practice, to enable peer learning, and to increase the impact radius of projects through transfer and scaling of good practice.

While the Lab provides the spaces and structures for the digital transformation in higher education, the three clusters with their eleven subprojects are the lynchpin of the project. The focus on three thematic focal points of the digitization strategy; the clusters of digital teaching/learning innovations, digital literacy, and digital internationalization, which exhibit intersections and synergy potentials among each other, took place in the course of the content-related evaluation of a potential analysis of digital teaching and learning at Leuphana.

Cluster

The challenge of the clusters is to transfer the objectives of the subprojects to an overarching level in order to contribute to further development at Leuphana in the cluster focus areas. Together with a strategic steering group and other relevant projects within the focus areas, the subprojects work in the so-called development teams on objectives for a sustainable digitization strategy and the implementation of the TP objectives in permanent structures at Leuphana.

Digital teaching-learning Innovation

The subprojects classified in the Digital Teaching-Learning Innovation cluster focus on the development of innovative teaching content through the use of digital tools. The goal is to promote the acquisition of competencies in the digital space, as well as the possibility of self-directed learning, by anchoring the newly developed didactic concepts in the university didactic certificate program of the Leuphana Teaching Service.

Digital Literacy

The goal of the Digital Literacy Cluster is to introduce digital literacy education and thus also the implementation of data literacy, which enables students to assess statements and contexts in a self-determined, reflective and responsible manner in the age of digitality. In addition, the cluster is dedicated to the reflection of learning and development processes of students and doctoral candidates with the help of digital formats.

Digital Internationalization

The pandemic-related merging of internationalization and digitization in studying and teaching offers the Digital Internationalization cluster great potential for expansion, flexibilization, and utilization for new target groups. The relevance of physical stays abroad by students is not questioned. Instead, the cluster explores and illuminates concepts for preparing a stay abroad or in terms of barrier-free internationalization.

Foundation

The Digital Transformation Lab for Teaching and Learning project is funded by the Innovation in University Teaching Foundation. The foundation’s goal is to permanently promote quality and innovation in studying and teaching in order to enable optimal learning. Universities nationwide are given
the opportunity to adapt more quickly and effectively to new societal challenges. By promoting suitable projects of the different universities, the knowledge exchange of successes, challenges and results is advanced.
